Edge of the Quarry is a brilliant depiction of the epic rock face of Statham’s Quarry in Gooseberry Hill in the City of Kalamunda area of Western Australia. This dramatic and awe-inspiring cliff face has long captured the imagination of those who visit; I sought to honour its grandeur through the use of brilliant cadmium orange and deep midnight blue; contrasting tones that evoke the sublime energy of standing before such raw natural power. The vivid hues reflect the interplay of sunlight and shadow across the stone; highlighting the quarry’s rugged textures and monumental presence.
Statham’s Quarry was once an important site for extracting granite; its rock used in the construction of roads and public works across Perth; a reminder of how the natural resources of this land have helped shape our communities. Today; it has been reclaimed by nature and admired by bushwalkers; rock climbers; and photographers who are drawn to its striking cliffs and the panoramic views over the Swan Coastal Plain. The quarry’s sheer faces and weathered formations tell a geological story of ancient forces; where tectonic shifts and time have sculpted the granite into the majestic escarpment we see today.
This artwork is a celebration of Statham’s Quarry as both a natural wonder and a part of our heritage; a place where people come to admire the scale and beauty of the landscape; to reflect; and to connect with the timelessness of the earth. Through Edge of the Quarry; I hope to capture not only the visual splendour of this site but also its enduring significance as a symbol of the powerful relationship between people and place.
