Endurance explores the monumental resilience of dolerite, a dense igneous rock formed when molten magma intruded fractures deep within the Earth and cooled slowly, creating interlocking minerals that resist erosion and time. The quarry walls reveal the geological patience of this stone, a silent record of subterranean heat, crystallisation, and pressure that has persisted for millions of years.

In this painting, I abstract the striated planes and rugged textures of the quarry, giving them energy through dynamic mark-making and vibrant colour. The dense surfaces of dolerite, though formed in violent natural processes, radiate a quiet stillness that evokes both strength and permanence. Through composition and texture, I aim to capture not just the physicality of the rock, but the sense of deep time embedded within it, a presence far older and more enduring than our fleeting human perspective.

Endurance invites viewers to consider the remarkable persistence of the natural world, the forces that have shaped it, and our own temporary passage across its ancient surfaces. Through this work, stone becomes a mirror for reflection, a symbol of strength, and a reminder of the enduring power of the Earth beneath our feet.
