Exploring the Pilbara’s Karijini gorges is a journey into both time and wonder. Fortescue Falls, with its cascading water framed by rust-red cliffs and verdant pockets of flora, became a place of quiet reflection and awe. In this painting, I aim to capture the interplay between permanence and transience, the enduring strength of the rock formations and the fleeting movement of water and light across their surfaces.

I am inspired by the way colour shifts as the sun travels across the gorge, how shadows carve themselves into rock faces, and how every crevice and pool holds its own story. The landscape of Karijini is alive with energy, memory, and quiet drama, and painting it allows me to translate these sensations into a visual language of abstract realism.

Through vibrant colour, layered textures, and expressive mark-making, I seek to evoke the emotional resonance of the place, inviting viewers to pause and connect with the environment in a personal way. My work is about noticing subtle details, the sparkle of water, the warmth of sunlit stone, the resilience of small plants thriving in harsh conditions. Fortescue Falls is both a memory and an invitation: a call to witness the beauty, fragility, and majesty of Western Australia’s ancient landscapes.
