Journey Awaits captures that unforgettable first glimpse of the Bungle Bungle Range; or Purnululu; as it rises from the vast Kimberley landscape of Western Australia. From a distance, these ancient striped domes appear like a sculptural wonderland; their beehive-like forms etched with striking bands of orange and grey. Formed over 350 million years ago, these towering sandstone structures have been shaped by time, wind, and water; their layered stripes telling stories of sediment laid down in an ancient sea and sculpted by the elements into the breathtaking forms we see today.

There is a sense of awe that fills you when you first set eyes on these natural giants; as you draw closer — whether walking through the narrow chasms, standing within the grandeur of Cathedral Gorge, or tracing the curves of the domes — you feel a deep connection to the land’s history and spirit. The Bungle Bungles are more than a geological marvel; they are a sacred place to the Gija and Jaru people; rich in cultural significance and ancient stories.

Tourists from across the world journey here to experience the magic of Purnululu National Park; the play of light on the rock faces at sunrise and sunset; the silence of the gorges; and the sheer scale of the landscape combine to create an energy that is both humbling and uplifting. It is a place that stays with you long after you leave; its beauty and ancient power captured in memory and feeling.

In Journey Awaits, I wanted to honour that first moment of wonder; the anticipation of exploring this extraordinary place; and the deep respect it inspires. To paint this landscape is to celebrate one of the most special and iconic places in Western Australia; a true treasure of our natural and cultural heritage.
