The Sound of Bells

The Sound of Bells is inspired by the majestic Bells Gorge; also known as Dalmanyi Gorge; in the heart of Western Australia’s Kimberley region. This breathtaking landscape is defined by its towering rock faces and the dramatic cascade of water that plunges into deep, cool pools below. The title is a play on words; when you gaze upon this painting, it’s as if you can almost hear the powerful sound of the waterfall echoing through the gorge, a reminder of nature’s force and beauty.

Bells Gorge is carved from ancient sandstone and volcanic rock, shaped over hundreds of millions of years by the persistent flow of water and the forces of erosion. The layers of exposed rock reveal the region’s geological history, their rich ochres and deep reds glowing in the Kimberley sun. The gorge is part of the Wunaamin Miliwundi Ranges (formerly King Leopold Ranges), a landscape of immense cultural significance and natural wonder.

This is a place where time feels suspended; where people have gathered, walked, and camped for thousands of years, drawn to the life-giving water and the sheltering cliffs. Today, Bells Gorge continues to captivate visitors with its epic scenery, inviting them to swim, hike, and experience the Kimberley’s wild beauty firsthand.

Painting The Sound of Bells was a joy; I sought to capture not just the visual splendour of the rock face and waterfall, but also the feeling of standing there; the sense of awe and serenity that fills you as you take in the landscape. This artwork is my way of sharing the memory of this special place; a celebration of one of the Kimberley’s true treasures, and an invitation for others to discover its magic for themselves.
