Touched by Flame is born from a fascination with the meeting place between land and sea, where ocean waves wash over rocks dusted with vibrant orange life. Along Australia’s rugged coasts, granite boulders become living canvases, their surfaces enlivened by fiery lichens and algal growth that thrive in the salty spray. These colours don’t spring from fire, but from ancient biological partnerships between fungus and algae that have taken centuries to flourish, and whose hues glow like embers against the cool blue of the sea. 

In these tidal landscapes the boundary between animate and inanimate blurs; rock and organism coexist through relentless wind, wave, sunlight, and time. Such places resonate with the pulse of deep nature, a rhythm shaped not by human perception but by geological and ecological forces far older than us.

My painting seeks to capture this elemental encounter — the intensity of colour where ocean meets stone, and the sensation of being held in a moment that is both fleeting and timeless. Through layered marks and expressive colour, Touched by Flame reflects the way life flourishes in extreme environments and how the simplest forms of being, crustose textures, lichened stone, tidal pools, can evoke wonder.

Ultimately, the work is an invitation to witness the poetry of place: to see the slow co‑creation between earth and sea, and to feel the quiet intensity of worlds that evolve beyond human time.
