Zig Zag Descent is inspired by the ancient boulders that stand like silent sentinels along the Zig Zag Scenic Drive in Gooseberry Hill, Western Australia. These immense rock formations, shaped over millennia, are witnesses to the ever-changing landscape; their surfaces weathered by time, wind, and rain, their presence a reminder of the earth’s deep history. I was drawn to their quiet strength and the way they frame the sweeping views across the Perth Hills and out to the city skyline and endless horizon beyond.
The Zig Zag Scenic Drive is a place of breathtaking contrasts; where the rugged beauty of the bush meets the vastness of the cityscape below. As you wind your way along this historic track, once part of a railway line, you can pause at lookouts where the land falls dramatically away, offering panoramic views that shift with the light of day. It is not uncommon to spot kangaroos grazing at dawn or dusk, or to feel the gentle breeze carrying the scent of eucalyptus through the air.
For locals and visitors alike, the Zig Zag is a place to reflect, to feel connected to both land and sky. The giant boulders scattered along the descent have, for countless years, stood watch over this passage; a natural gallery of sculptural forms shaped by the forces of nature. They are a reminder of the ancient stories held within the land, and the enduring beauty of the Perth Hills.
Through Zig Zag Descent, I have sought to celebrate the timelessness of this landscape; the majestic rocks, the layered hills, and the vast horizon that invites all who visit to pause, look outward, and feel a sense of wonder. This is a special place that every Perth resident and every traveller should experience, to truly appreciate the natural treasures of Western Australia.
